The works of its Numerical Series, created from a simple artistic concept and an aesthetic based on the purity of bodily movement, have toured more than 40 countries across five continents and have been featured in over 100 international arts festivals.

The company has attracted widespread acclaim from audiences of all backgrounds, becoming one of the most recognised and sought-after Chinese contemporary dance companies on the international stage. Since 2013, it has been invited to present the Numerical Series at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in Beijing for ten consecutive years, and every work in the series has been performed there to date.

In 2023, the company, committed to the idea of “simplifying complexity to achieve a pure aesthetic of dance”, received one of the most prestigious and influential awards in the dance world: the Silver Lion for Dance at the Venice Biennale.

PROGRAMME: 13 & 14

13 is the twelfth instalment of choreographer Tao Ye’s Numerical Series. The work uses the concept of the Trinity to correspond with the number 13, integrating three forms of expression: solo, duet and group dance. These three modes of interaction and physical connection form the entirety of the creation.

In the piece, the dancers connect as a single unit and gradually divide and transform into different configurations. Continuous changes in the choreographic sequence generate a complex physical universe in which impact, compression, fusion, falling, rebound, traction and countless other possibilities take shape.

Through slow, medium and fast rhythms, the bodies transform into water, mountains, rocks and all kinds of elements. The body thus becomes a medium capable of revealing the ever-changing and unpredictable nature of imagination.

The concepts of one, two and multiple dimensions establish a structural framework. In this creation, the choreographer simultaneously develops transformations of body, space and time to construct a chaotic whole. Through a combination of rigorous and open concepts, the choreography responds to the various states of a reality that is present, tangible and yet impermanent.

Rhythm is the bond that connects all forms of life.

14, the thirteenth work in Tao Ye’s Numerical Series, revolves around the exploration of rhythm and transformation. How can a new context for the body be challenged? In this work, Tao Ye breaks away from his previous creative method based on repetitive cycles and uses an ever-changing movement texture to explore the spatio-temporal possibilities that exist between movement and stillness.

The music boldly adopts a single minimalist and balanced temperament, using the progression of clock hands as a counterpart to the complex physical dynamics of the dance. Through an audiovisual relationship based on the principle that “less is more”, the Circular Movement System (the physical technique developed by TAO Dance Theater) expands to its fullest expression.

The cuts and folds of points, lines and planes in space, together with the agitation and swaying controlled by body weight, bring the work once again back to the pure movement of the body. Within a rhythm that simultaneously changes and remains, infinite possibilities unfold.

Approximate duration: 75 minutes, including a 15-minute intermission

TAO Dance Theater is a professional contemporary dance company founded in 2008 by Tao Ye, Duan Ni and Wang Hao.
