Eloísa está debajo de un almendro

Ilustre Colegio de Abogados de las Illes Balears

Eloísa Is Under an Almond Tree: The Triumph of Absurdity.

Some families keep secrets — and then there are the Briones. In this household, common sense is the least common of the senses: people travel without leaving their beds, servants resign due to excessive eccentricity, and the past has the strange habit of refusing to stay buried.

Mariana, young and impulsive, finds herself drawn to the mysterious Fernando, a man who seems to live in a parallel dimension and whose behaviour hides a disturbing shadow: the suspicion of a crime committed years ago beneath the branches of an almond tree.

Enrique Jardiel Poncela plunges us into an architecture of the absurd where suspense and laughter go hand in hand. Through sharp dialogue and situations that defy all logic, the audience becomes detective in a plot that is at once an ode to romantic love and a fierce satire of high society. Who is Eloísa? Why does it smell of almonds? And why does no one in this house seem to be in their right mind? Step inside and see: sanity remains at the door.
