Two friends. Such close friends that they are sisters. Only one shadow hangs over their friendship:
“While one grew up confident,
pampered by life and smiling,
the other felt unhappy…”
We strip Phaedra and Medea of their peplos and bring them into the present day, turning them into seemingly grey, ordinary beings. Only when conflict arises do they suddenly assume an ancient sense of fate, under whose influence they will sweep away everything in their path. In the background, Cádiz — a city with a Macondo-like profile — where everyday elements take on a magical dimension that foretells tragedy: the unsettling easterly wind, announced by the grinder’s flute and the presence of the circus on the outskirts of the city, the birdsong, the chorus of neighbours…
The Wind Is Wild is a tragedy pierced from beginning to end by laughter. It is the legacy of the land we come from and to which we always return: Cádiz, where we learned that in every terrible story there is a paradox that can lead to comedy; and conversely, that every spark of humour always carries a tragic undertone.
